Merck Opens a Hub office In Ethiopia that will cover Sudan, Ethiopia and French-speaking African countries

Andalem was at the opening ceremony and press conference held on Thursday, May 8, 2014, to celebrate MERCK’s first office in Ethiopia. Led by Chokri Ahmadi, the Addis Ababa representative office will cover Sudan, Ethiopia and French-speaking Africa countries, according to Elcin Ergun, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Commercial at Merck Serono.

During the Press conference, Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of the Executive Board of E.Merck KG, and Vice Chairman of the Board of Partners said “I strongly believe that our trusted name and products, strong values and unique capabilities will support partnership approach to build and sustain in Ethiopia” Frank also underlined that MERCK is in a long term relationship with Ethiopia as its economy is growing at a healthy pace. He added “We are committed helping Ethiopia to improve access to health through our quality pharmaceutical products”.

It is true that over the years, Merck has built a strong brand worldwide, in the pharmaceutical market, with its unconditional commitment to Innovation, Quality and Corporate Social Responsibility. Merck has been fighting against schistosomiasis, more commonly known as bilharzia and is a trusted partner of the World Health Organization (WHO) in fighting Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD). Besides the opening of the new Merck office in Addis Ababa, Karim Bendhaou, Managing Director Africa at Merck Serono also announced the company’s engagement in two corporate responsibility projects in Ethiopia:

• The Merck Praziquantel Donation Program
• The donation of Minilabs through Merck’s Philanthropic organization, the Global Pharma Health Found.
Andalem is glad that a multinational company with such a strong culture of Innovation and commitment to social responsibility has an integrative approach to establish the first regional hub to cover Sudan, Ethiopia, and French-speaking Africa.
