U.S-Africa Leaders Summit: President Obama to welcome African heads of state for a three day meeting

Today President Obama will welcome leaders from across the African continent to the Nation’s Capital for the first of its kind U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. This three day summit, is meant to further strengthen U.S.'s ties with one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions.

The August 4-6 Summit will summit will underline the United State's commitment to the African population and will focus on how to encourage progress in key areas that Africans define as critical for the future of the continent: expanding trade and investment ties, engaging young African leaders, promoting inclusive sustainable development, expanding cooperation on peace and security, and gaining a better future for Africa’s next generation.

Throughout the summit, African leaders will have an opportunity to engage with President Obama, his Cabinet members, and other key leaders, including business executives from the U.S. and Africa, Members of Congress, and members of civil society.

President Obama invited all African heads of state or government in good standing with the United States and the African Union to attend the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. An invitation was also extended to the African Union Chairperson.

“Africa also has strong ties with other regions and nations, but America’s engagement with Africa is fundamentally different,” national security adviser Susan E. Rice said at the U.S. Institute for Peace. “We don’t see Africa as a pipeline to extract vital resources, nor as a funnel for charity. The continent is a dynamic region of boundless possibility.” (Watch Susan E. Rice previewing this first ever summit on the below video.)

Business leaders are intensely focused on the summit. The chief executives of Coca-Cola, General Electric and other major firms will be in town, while the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is hosting 11 heads of state at seven side events.
