About NEPAD Business Foundation

Spearheaded by leaders of the five initiating states (Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal and South Africa), and formally adopted at the African Union Summit held in Lusaka, Zambia in July 2001, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD Agency) was developed as a strategic framework for the economic and social development of Africa.
In this context, the NEPAD Business Foundation was formed at the request of the then President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, in June 2002, to engage the private sector to support NEPAD Agency’s strategic framework. NBF initially consisted of South African large corporations. The founding Chairman was Dr. Reuel Khoza and meetings were hosted by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
In 2004, the NEPAD Business Foundation registered as a non-profit organization and central coordinating office of thirteen industry working groups led by private sector companies. Five founding partners generously contributed resources towards its establishment, namely Anglo American, ESKOM, MTN, Old Mutual and Transnet.
NBF now works with governments, large corporates, SMEs, DFIs, CSOs and the donor community to develop sustainable solutions and mutually beneficial partnerships in:
1. Agriculture and food security (Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Program – CAADP);
2. Regional integration and infrastructure (Program for Infrastructure Development in Africa – PIDA);
3. Economic and corporate governance (African Corporate Governance Network – ACGN; and African Peer Review Mechanism – APRM);
4. Human development and capacity building (Capacity Development Strategic Framework – CDSF); and
5. Climate change and natural resources management (Strategic Water Partners Network – SWPN).

Today, NBF is one of Africa's leading membership based foundations with members like GE, Citi, Dell, PwC, Deloitte, Coca-Cola, Nestlé and currently has offices in South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi and now Ethiopia.
